In 1856 Donk Rep Preston Brooks nearly beat Elph Senator Charles Sumner to death on the floor of the Senate.
Checking the Fridge for Leftovers 
It took Charles Sumner 2 years before he could return to the floor of the Senate; another couple of years before he was considered fully healed; and he never really did recover fully from the attack.
Or, as Democrats would say, “he got what he deserved.”
