Christmas?

NFL draft is tomorrow. Lots of fans will dedicate at LEAST a little time to watching, if only the first few picks on Thursday. And there is a variety of fan involvement. There’s the casual fan who won’t watch past the first pick. There’s the team fan who watches for his fave franchise picks and that’s it. There’s the NFL football fan who will watch the whole thing with varying degrees of interest depending on who’s on the clock.

And then there are us FFL players. Some of us have already had our rookie drafts and wanna see where our new shiney is going. Some of us are in Conference specific leagues and wanna see who goes where. And some of us just like to make fun of other guys in the league as we see the results.

Which brings me to holidays. There are several “big days” in the life of a FFL: the NFL draft, the FFL draft, the beginning of free agency, opening kickoff. But how do these map on to our Judeo-Christian holidays?

Let’s start the year at the end of the ecumenical calendar …. the NFL Draft is Easter. We are risen. It marks rebirth. Forgiveness of past sins.

Next up in OUR league is the free agent auction. Christmas. Unwrapping all the new gifts. Maps nicely onto Hanukkah as well since it spreads the gift giving over several days.

FFL Draft? Thanksgiving. For these gifts we are about to receive make us truly grateful.

Kickoff? Independence Day with all the fireworks. St. Patrick’s Day with the consumption of adult beverages and the ritual wearing of the official colors? Halloween with the procuring of tricks and treats, along with some good old-fashioned scares?

Did I miss any? Thoughts?

and apologies to anyone who views this post as sacrilegious. It was NOT intended as such. Just wait until I get around to writing about St. Larry – the Patron Saint of FFL!
