tsun Week

Roughriders went down to defeat last week. Not surprised they lost but Soph QB (3rd in the state in passing) was carried off the field in the first quarter. NOT a “good” way to lose. Top receiver graduates. We’ll see what next season holds.

Quite the week in college football. No surprise for the Buckeyes (on the field anyway.) Hairball investigation terminated. Still no idea why. And fwiw Day’s brother is NOT a PI in Michigan. Jus’ sayin’.

Top four going into this week’s play? tsun. TOSU. UGA. And then it gets weird. Not gonna lie. I just don’t see FSU or Washington in this slot. Bama, Oregon and Texas are all better. Eight team playoff? Nah. The final two will be the Big ? winner vs UGA. And my WORST prediction? tsun by a figgie or four. And I hope I’m wrong.

Saints didn’t lose this week, strengthen their grip on the NFC South and prep for the dirty birds this week. Chiefs and Ravens my picks in the AFC. Eagles Niners in the NFC. Saints 21-20. Likely to host the Cowboys. They’ll lose by a TD.

Football crunch time

Roughriders beat the Cadets by more than they did in ’21. Next up: The Garaway Patriots – only undefeated D VI team in the state. This is the Elite 8. Will be within a FG.

ONU closed out the season with another win. Buckeye’s won by a ton as predicted. tsun won even though their coach was serving three hours in time-out. They’re probably the best team in the country but they cheated to get there so we’ll see what happens. Buckeye’s are a solid #2 with the Dawgs third. tsun and Ga both have SoS over 60! We’ll put FSU 4th with the Huskies outside looking in. Also perched to pounce are Alabama, Oregon, and Texas. Bama benefits from a Georgia loss but Oregon gets no help from a Washington loss. Buckeye’s within a score of tsun. Georgia will probably top Bama but it should be slim.

Saints found a way again this weekend and lost three players in the process. Bye week is welcome. Chiefs and Ravens top the AFC. Eagles and Niners on the NFC. Both of my FFL teams are a win away from qualifying for the playoffs with three games to go.

On Veteran’s Day

Not sure if I’ve shared this before but I’ve told the story a dozen times.

My FFL was found in 1985. In 1987 a young man I knew from theater asked for a team and we brought him in. He was with us until 2003. After his first few years he was assisted by his dad who took over a team of his own from 1994 through 1999. Meanwhile in 1997 we had an opening and a co-worker (Viet Nam era Marine) took the spot.

97 was quite vocal about his service. I’d known 94 for years and nary a peep. In those days we had a spring meeting in April to introduce new owners and discuss rule changes. The ’97 meeting was held at the York steak house on the west side. (Tried to take our annual draft back there this season but they weren’t interested in hosting us.) Introductions were made. I mentioned to 94 that 97 was a Marine Nam vet. 94 quietly observed that he wasn’t a Marine but that he saved a lot of Marines in Nam. 97 bristled and thought “here we go!”

“NOBODY saves a Marine but another Marine. What the hell were YOU?”

94 simply replied “I flew air evac.”

97 paused …. thought a moment …. then said “you guys DID save a lot of Marines!” They shook hands and were quite good friends the next two seasons.

Friday night football

And Saturday afternoon. And evening. And Sunday morning (live from Frankfort.)

West Jeff takes on the Fort Frye Cadets in Lancaster tonight. Last played them 11/20/21 and beat them 16-14 for the regional title on the way to losing to Coldwater in the Final Four. Tonight? Roughriders by 7-10.

Buckeyes will romp Sparty by 30+. tsun and PSU will be withing a point. Top four? tsun is good but haven’t played anyone as good as PSU. We’ll put them in the top spot pending investigation. Buckeyes #2. Alabama has played the toughest schedule in the country but has a loss as does Oregon, Texas and PSU. A Penn State win this w/e will go a long way to making them the #4 team. Georgia’s schedule is on par with tsun but undefeated puts them at my #3. Florida State gets #4 with Washington on the outside looking in. Side note: Kansas State might be the best three loss team ever.

Saints are marching. They’ll play the Vikings tough but find a way to lose in the final five minutes. Rest on the NFL? Chiefs and Bills with next week’s Ravens/Bengals winner maybe leapfrogging. Eagles are kind of alone with the 49ers and Cowboys dueling to lose the George Halas Trophy.

Audition issues

I remember the old days when a theater would hold 2-3 days of auditions, the committee would put there heads together and cast the show and then you start rehearsals. Whole process took 4-5 days. We began auditions in June. Couldn’t cast so show postponed to January. We auditioned this weekend and we STILL can’t cast the show. I’ll not be directing again.

We DID have a wonderful young man audition. Parents are Eastern European (or Western Asian?) and he’s home schooled. Had a home schooled young man at my table last month as well. This is NOT your father’s homeschooling. And that’s a GOOD thing. Speaking of schooling:
