Pigskin!

Been kinda quiet on football so far this season but it’s been – calamitous nonetheless.

HS: My Roughriders graduated roughly half the team, including the coaches eldest son QB who is playing at the D III level. Best defensive player’s dad was transferred to Youngstown. And a disgruntled 2nd string RB transferred to a neighboring school Then we lost the season opener. Coach Buescher righted the ship quickly. We scored 43+ the next three games, never allowing more than 34. Sadly those opponents are currently a combined 5-7. Not BAD but nothing to brag about. The next two opponents are both undefeated. We’ll quickly find out how good we are, get a respite, then close out with our current rival, currently undefeated Mechanicsburg.

College: My Polar Bears will be middle of the road. Lost the season opener in OT then beat the former Capitol Crusaders <whew.> I’ll be happy if we aren’t TOO far under .500. Buckeye’s beat the #5 team at home but fail to cover the spread by about 6. Drop one spot in the poll. Alabama goes on the road against an unranked team, escapes with a 1 point victory, failing to cover by about 19 ….. and drops one in the polls.

Current top 4: Bama, Georgia, OSU … and the OTHER OSU. Texas has a loss (with an asterisk). Clemson and Oklahoma haven’t played a D1 schedule. Those are the only schools worthy of consideration at this point. Buckeyes over Rockets this week by three plus scores. Two other games pitting top 25’s against each other. A&M over the Canes by a little more than a FG. Ducks by single digits over Cougs.

NFL: Too early to tall, especial;y with some of the early outcomes and injuries. Chiefs and Bills are the class of the AFC. Rams and Bucs in the NFC. And Tompa Brady will beat by Saints by less than a TD this week in another close one.

Nature is healing

Schools are reopening and MOST of the country is trying to return to something vaguely resembling normalcy. If you know me you know I can’t return to something I didn’t wander too far away from. But the maskers are still with us (like the Biblical poor, they will be with us always.) Odd vestigial regulations persist like the monk’s kitten. And the receipts are being collected.

New CDC Covid guidelines treat vaxxed and unvaxxed individuals exactly the same. What about all those people who lost their jobs because they didn’t get the shot?

Doctors from USC, UCLA say mask mandates for COVID-19 not effective, as debate goes on.

Back to school

Old school. Y’see kids, back in MY day mid-August was the county fair, rolled right into the state fair rolled right into the community festival which ended on Monday. Teachers reported Tuesday. School started Wednesday. And the first football game was Friday. NOW the county fair’s been moved to early July, I have no IDEA when the state fair is, the community festival is STILL Labor Day weekend, school started three weeks ago, as did the HS football season. So I’m always kinda lost.

Done driving

August was a little blah behind the wheel. I was pretty much done and had hit a slow streak. And was getting tired of most of my Px. Ready for the change to school. Spent a grand on gas this summer. That’ll eat up TWO of my bonuses. Ninety days. That’ll get me to Christmas so no “bonus” until NEXT year.

Back to school

Actually started last Friday but TODAY is the first day of my regular building sub gig. Started well, including applause from the foreign language department. But not all schools are ready to hit the ground running. Lots of issues out there. Columbus public teachers may be striking soon. There aren’t enough subs in the CBUS are NOW and many refuse to cover CPS in the BEST of times, so I don’t know WHAT they’re gonna do. All I DO know is it isn’t going to involve ME.

I opposed this during the Obama administration and still do. I’M HOPING TO BE ABLE TO FIGHT THIS:  “Excusing Misbehavior Is Bad for Kids and Schools, But That’s What Biden Admin Want to do for ‘Equity.‘”  (Here’s my argument.  Oh, and here’s more … I’ve been hammering on this nail for a while.

August is a big month. Will be done driving for a while. Back in the classroom subbing. And directing a show. Thankfully the board @ LTOB saw fit to “recommend” masks and vaccinations and boosters – not require them. Had over 30 people audition for eleven parts. GREAT cast. And Ohio hasn’t made any silly decisions yet either so fall quarter might be smooth

July running rundown

It was a good month with some bad stuff sprinkled in

First the good stuff – a few numbers.

Weight under 213. That’s down a dozen from 1/1.

Body fat under 24. Was 30!

Which means I WAS lugging around 67.5 pounds of fat with 158 of muscle, bone and water, whereas NOW I’m at about 51 pounds of fat with about four POUNDS more muscle. BMI has dropped from 28.1 to 26.6

VO2 max is around 35 which is pretty good for a guy my age. But not good enough. I need to get it up around 40. Why? How do I know? Workouts. THAT’s how I know. My 100m is lagging at 18.2 due mainly to this nagging back/hip thing. 400m at 1:30 is ok at this point. Once I get up to about 800m to my 8:11 miles it starts to lag.

Quick biology stuff. The 400m sprinter derives 14% of its fuel from the anaerobic alactic (phosphagen) energy system, 48% from the anaerobic lactic (glycolytic) energy system and 38% from the aerobic system. Each of these systems can be further broken down into power and capacity. This early training phase focuses on anaerobic lactic capacity and power, along with aerobic capacity (distance work.) Distance work (1-3 miles) is going ok. Anaerobic lactic power (<400m) has been going fine. But the OTHER – the repeats in the 500-900m range – has SUCKED. Pace of the repeats has been solid, but I can’t do ENOUGH of them. If the workout calls for 4-6 I’m lucky to get 3.

So how do I fix this? I think I hone in on the Cooper test result. Instead of targeting 35-37 I need to get it over 40. That means shaving about a minute off my 2000m. So I’ll keep the weight work where it is. I’ll dump the “speed work” for the time being. I’ll continue the distance work with Astrands on the weekend. And re-evaluate the Cooper test as the distance times come down.

Additionally I’ve noticed that recovery times “haven’t been long enough.” Most of the plans I follow call for 1 or 2 minute recovery between efforts. Scientifically I know I need my heart rate down under triple digits between reps. It hasn’t been getting there. So along with the improved recovery heart rate I’m also going to start goosing those durations up a bit due to my age – adding up to 50% to the recommended times, until the improvement shows up, when I can “reduce the goose.”

And finally I’ve started using acute chronic workload monitoring to evaluate my work. Currently basing it on distance but will modify to include heart rate soon. This enables me to see when I’m not working hard enough AND when I’m over-doing it. Makes scheduling those days off a lot more “math” and a lot less “feel.”
