Moderately distressed that I’m mostly aggregating and not really “writing” much. So in an effort to fix that I will, on occasion, use the Victory Girls Blog weekly 100 word challenge, and on other occasions use the WordPress writing prompt. Just to see what spews out.

I don’t know why they did it. It couldn’t have been fun. Was there resentment? Then why do it, week after week? Season after season? And yet there we were, down on the old home place, ponies saddled and kids riding. After a trip in the back of the pickup. Sunday after Sunday. No golf. No outings with co-workers. Only what now, to us, appears as work. Raising children. Children for whom they sacrificed even though at the time we didn’t “get it.” Children who appreciate where foods comes from. Children who, five dozen years later, finally recognize it. Opportunity.

February was rough in the classroom

I’ve renegotiated my agreement with the school. “Altering the deal” if you will.

I spent WAY too many days in the Intermediate (4-6) and Middle (7-8) School buildings. And I’ll offer this analysis of the damage done by the last two years.

If they’d hit puberty they tended to level out. Social media and mobility helped them at least maintain proper socialization.

If they’re just hitting it – they lost two year. Those middle schoolers are like ten year olds. And that, with puberty hitting, was NOT a good. Too much misdirected energy that they’ve never learned how to handle or channel.

And the Intermediate students? They never LEARNED to behave. Nothing. They’re essentially five or six year olds in ten year old bodies.

As these kids move through the system and into society we are ALL gonna pay. You think colleges are full of entitled snowflakes NOW? We’re gonna have half a generation of socially dysfunctional “adults” to deal with.

Why not Moskva?

This has bugged me for years and it’s becoming even more obvious now. Quick – what’s the capitol of Mainland China? 98% of you responded Beijing. But a few of you MIGHT have slipped in a Peking. How about the capitol of the Indian state of Maharashtra? Most of you pronounce it Mumbai but I’m old enough to remember when it was Bombay. But we never seriously say “Paree” instead of Paris “Bearlean” instead of Berlin. And President Obama intoning “Pokeestahn” used to cause me to erupt into peels of laughter.

And we’re seeing it again. US news outlets are doing a decent job differentiating the Ukranian-derived Kyiv from the Russian-derived Kiev … but why no Russiya, Moskva or or Ookrania? What’s the deal? Much of the rest of the world prefers Nueva York but WE don’t. What’s the deal?
