And this surprises whom, exactly?

Study: Rideshare services reduce drunk-driving convictions, injuries from crashes.

There is no IQ test to operate a ride-share app. Driving rain. Got a ping to the Nationwide/Convention Center part of downtown. Address didn’t match pin, didn’t match icon. So about a half-mile away I texted Px and asked where they were.

“In the pull-around.”

There are not less than four “pull-arounds” on that block.

“Which one?”

“The hotel.”

ALL of the “pull-arounds” are for hotels. Again: driving rain and I’m trying to facilitate the pick up to avoid drenching the Px. But no. They couldn’t even muster the requisite mental faculties to assist.

and the PROS Act just keeps getting closer.

Summer driving n stuff

Lot’s more no-shows. Especially scheduled pick-up no-shows. Weird?

Tips running about where they were. Not many promos from Uber but the fact that they pay for long pick-ups is nice and makes it less likely that I’ll cancel a ride. Lyft has been running a lot of streak bonus’s but every other week. And occasionally there’s the “surge bonus” – got one of this morning in my living room! And then there’s this weird (?) earnings guarantee. For example this week I had a deal wherein if I gave 27 rides from 5am Monday to 5am Friday they’d guarantee that they’d be $7.60 each. That put an extra $30 in my pocket. Been doing about $20-$30 per hour so days haven’t been grinds. All in all I’ve been happy with the flow. Probably six weeks of driving left this summer.

I don’t care

And if I DID this isn’t where I’d be looking for a discussion.

Here’s the deal. I have several hobbies that the interwebs facilitate and improve. D&D and fantasy football to name just two. And in a given week I visit dozens of websites looking for hobby-specific information. Any new fantasy league rules? Where’s D. Watson gonna end up? Where can I find that old adventure published in Dragon Magazine in 1982? How can I improve my overland travel DMing?

And if I wanna read a lengthy discussion on CRT or Trans law or the Arab-Israeli conflict? Well, I have sites that will provide that in spades – from all directions. So “stay in your lane.” Hate that phrase but it applies here. There’s an outstanding (free) index source I frequently use that opens with the following warning: “And we swear to God, if anyone comes in here and starts spouting off QAnon bullshit about COVID-19 or literally anything else, you are going to get permabanned so thoroughly that your grandchildren won’t be allowed to post here.” I’ve always ignored it because I deem that phrase “literally anything else” to be broad and directed at virtually everything else regardless of the side. But a lengthy post at a D&D mapping site was a long-winded rant on LGBTQ (no, not “Let’s get Biden to quit”) LSMFT rights. Now the folks who run the site can write about anything they damned well want to. And why piss off 1/3 (1/4? 1/5?) of your readers. You’re making a wee bit of revenue off of ads, and maybe a patreon account. Why run them off? Bad for business but you get your virtue signalling jollies so there’s that.

I’m reminded of the story told by Yogi Berra. Yogi was behind the plate when a batter stepped into the box and used his bat to draw a cross in the dirt. Berra scratched out the cross with his cleats and said gently, “Why don’t you just let Him watch?”

The SJW’s are insisting that civil society be destroyed and replaced with ….well, nothing as far as I can tell. Those of us online trying to be civil would like to ask that they not be assisted in their destruction.

What I’m consumin’

Movies: Watched A Quiet Place: 2. John K has a very good eye/hand for this directing thang. Story is a bit derivative (Bird Box, Jurassic Park, Deep Blue Sea) but there’s a solid hero’s journey in there. This isn’t a scare fest. It’s a character study.

Reading: Nothing new. With school out my reading time is more limited. Guess I HAVE been binging on D&D stuff every once in a while but that doesn’t count. And Frederick Douglass’ “What, to a slave, is the 4th of July?” will get re-started in a week or so.

TV: Big Sky is on hiatus. Clarice has jumped the shark. Letterkenny is winding down. So we picked up on Critical Role – over 600 hours of a group of voice actors playing D&D. Been fun.

Music: Dragging Holst back onto my list. At least The Planets.
