which implies there will be MORE parts …. and perhaps my quibble is more with the allowed answers than the questions themselves, but if you’ve read this far you get my point.
For those not up to speed OK Cupid is a “dating” app that proposes to match you with folks who have similar inclinations. T that end it asks a series of multiple choice question allowing you to provide your answer along with ACCEPTABLE answers from potential matches, a weighting scale, and the ability to add comments. These posts will address what I feel are some SERIOUS problems in what should be a simple methodology.
Q. What event sounds most appealing? Options are a Sci-Fi convention, Political Convention, Music Festival, and New Years Eve in Times Square. I’ll skip the first. Seems pretty clear. As for the political convention – which one? “My” party? The loyal opposition? Some third party I care even LESS about? Not really a valid offering. Same goes for the music festival. Bluegrass? Jazz? Klezmer? Bagpipe? Too many false choices. Drop the question
Q. Do you think you are still evolving or are you pretty much the way you are always going to be? Do they mean growing? As an organism and by definition I’m not really evolving, am I? Although growth along several dimensions is obvious. Re-word the question.
Q. Are carbohydrates something you think about? Really? That’s a question? What are you trying to gauge here – dietary awareness? Then change the question to maybe “something you’re concerned about.”
Q. Do you enjoy discussing politics? With a knowledgeable interlocutor? Sure. With a semi-literate jackass? Not so much. Remove the question.
Q. Best first date? Options are coffee, drinks, dinner, something cultural or activity based. How about NONE?! Best? And those are the only options which presumes one of those IS the best? Change the question to “better.” I still won’t like it but linguistically it’s a better question.
I’ll be back in a few days with a few more.
