So so little lately

but the secret is …. I have a small piece which might be published soon. And it’s freaking my out and not going well. And it’ll take a chunk of the next two month. But I’ll still be here.

School wrapped up well. Graduation went well. Pulled a week at Canal Winchester … and the hit the road. Not going well but Friday was awesome. It’ll do. Fill the gaps. So let’s talk about the kids:

Holiday break coming and not a moment too soon!

And the holiday is Christmas. Let there be no mistake about that. The celebration of heavily armed Jews is already well under way. Winter Solstice still five days off (although it IS the last day of our school.) Zarathosht Diso is the 26th. So Christmas it is.

K-12 IMPLOSION UPDATE: ‘B’ is for below grade level (and chronically absent). “Achievement is down and absenteeism is way up, yet report cards show the same grades — or higher — as before the pandemic, concludes False Signals, a new report by EdNavigator and Learning Heroes. No wonder ‘families believe that everything is back to normal or will be soon.’ No wonder demand is low for tutoring and summer school.”

“My fifth-grade science project was to type everyone’s blood in my class. My oldest son’s fifth-grade science project, four decades later, was the equivalent of number-painting a comic book.”

Audition issues

I remember the old days when a theater would hold 2-3 days of auditions, the committee would put there heads together and cast the show and then you start rehearsals. Whole process took 4-5 days. We began auditions in June. Couldn’t cast so show postponed to January. We auditioned this weekend and we STILL can’t cast the show. I’ll not be directing again.

We DID have a wonderful young man audition. Parents are Eastern European (or Western Asian?) and he’s home schooled. Had a home schooled young man at my table last month as well. This is NOT your father’s homeschooling. And that’s a GOOD thing. Speaking of schooling:

Forty-two more sleeps ….’til school

Looking forward to heading back. I’ve had the incoming seniors since 8th grade. Might be pleasant. Already been asked to present one with his diploma! Not sure about the “building sub” thing. Haven’t been asked (formally) so my PLAN is to pick up days at HTHS as they become available. I’ll pick up BHS if available the night before. And if I have NOTHING at 6am I’ll drive down to HTHS and see what opens up (figure there’s about a 25% chance) and if nothing there I can pick up other schools as needed spur of the moment (OR take the day off OR drive a little.) Don’t WANNA miss days because that impacts my summer comfort level.

Of course it ain’t all gonna be beer and skittles.

WHAT CAN’T GO ON FOREVER, WONT. The government schools are a total mess, but let’s make one thing very clear: this is the result of policies promoted by the teachers’ unions and the “ed” schools: Teachers sound alarm on growing problems in schools as colleagues leave ‘in droves’

And now it’s time to hit the road!

Back to the highways and byways next week

Unless I land a sweet, sweet summer school sub gig. I’ll do my usual out around 9 and be done by 4 or $100 whichever comes first. Or after a LOOONG trip. So wish me luck. In the meantime:

Summer shrinkage for kids:

Quote of the Week (which I’ll likely use again): the main function of education is not to teach useful skills (or even useless skills), but to certify students’ employability. By and large, the reason our customers are on campus is to credibly show, or “signal,” their intelligence, work ethic, and sheer conformity. While we like to picture education as job training, it is largely a passport to the real training that happens on the job. — Bryan Caplan
